The Process

Installing an epoxy flake floor in a garage typically involves several steps. Here's a general overview of the process:
1. Preparation: Begin by clearing the garage and removing any items or debris. Clean the floor thoroughly, removing any oil, grease, or stains. It is imperative to grind the concrete to the proper profile to ensure proper adhesion.
2. Repair and Patch: Inspect the floor for cracks, divots, or other damages. Repair any issues using an appropriate epoxy compound.
3. Primer Application: Apply an epoxy primer to the prepared floor. This helps to promote adhesion and provides a solid base for the subsequent layers. Proper measurements and mixing are very important for adhesion and hardness.
4. Base Coat Application: Once the primer is dry, apply the base coat of epoxy. This is typically a solid color epoxy that serves as the foundation for the flake system. Use a roller or a squeegee to apply the epoxy evenly.
5. Flake Broadcast: While the base coat is still wet, broadcast the epoxy flakes over the entire surface. Sprinkle the flakes in a uniform manner, ensuring full coverage. Allow the base coat to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually for several hours or overnight.
6. Flake Locking Coat: Once the base coat has cured, remove any loose or excess flakes by lightly scraping the surface and vacuuming one final time. Then apply a clear epoxy or polyaspartic locking coat to encapsulate and secure the flakes. This helps to provide a smooth, durable finish and enhances the floor's overall strength.
